If you are anything like me you are sick and tired of shoveling and wondering where on earth (or at least on my little patch of it) am I going to put more snow. The snow banks on either side of our driveway are already 5+ feet high.

Now I consider myself a tall strong woman, shoveling through storm 1 . . . 2 . . . 3 didn't faze me much. Storm 4 was a challenge as I had to sling the snow higher and further than before. I am now thinking that I will have to develop some supernatural- gravity fighting- ability to shovel snow over a bank that is taller than I am and far enough out that it doesn't come rolling back down in order to deal with this next one.

Maybe I should have sat down at the beginning of this winter with a large map of our property and drawn out a snow removal plan, maybe I should have gone into this with a strategy, a master plan. But alas, here I am with no plan, snow banks up to my eyeballs and wondering if I will see my grass ever again.

There is a lot to be said for being prepared. Even though a master snow removal plan has eluded me it has had me thinking a lot about all of my family and friends out on the road driving around in these snowy ice conditions and has inspired me to share a couple of things you can do to make sure you are prepared when you head out on the road this winter. A few of this tips I learned from my Grandpa, who was never without some preventative advice, and others I have learned from experience and heard on the news.

1. Never let your gas tank go under half a tank (thanks Grandpa). He always told me to pretend that half full was almost empty. This way no matter what the conditions, traffic accident on the highway, emergency in the middle of the night or unexpected (or expected) bad weather you are never at risk for running out of gas. Certainly the night before a storm it is a very good idea to fill your tank.

2. Never leave the house without a warm jacket (again thanks grandpa) Even if you are just running to the store or gas station, your car is already warm or you already have a jacket at the office, there is no guarantee that you will make it where you are going. Even if someone were to rear-end you at the traffic light you don't want to be standing out in the cold in just a t-shirt. Having gloves and a hat in your car is also a very good idea.

3. Cell phone charger in your car  (okay grandpa has been gone for a few years and didn't have a cell phone, but if he did I am sure he would have advised having a car charger) I am the worst culprit of running around with a half charged cell phone and have more than once been on my way home late a night with a dead cell phone and no charger thinking what if I were to get in an accident, I would have no way of calling for help. Buy a car charger - keep it in your vehicle at all times.

4. A warm blanket - if you get stranded on the road and your car won't start or you run out of gas (see #1 on how to avoid running out of gas) it will get chilly, having a warm blanket could help you survive freezing temperatures.

5. A candy bar/ protein bar of your choice - This way if you get really, really stranded, like the kind of stranded that makes national news where you are undiscovered for days and days, you can nibble on your candy bar of choice and when you are finally rescued you can attribute your survival to said candy bar and probably get a million dollar endorsement deal.

6. Flares - I just heard on the news about how important it is to have some. I always assumed the police put them out for you, but if the conditions are bad it make take the police a while to arrive and if you are in an accident that has compromised your cars electrical system your four way flashers may not work. I will be stopping at the store tonight to pick some up, if you have a vehicle emergency kit they might be included.

7. Flashlight - Again if your cars electrical system fails and you need to see stuff it would be helpful to have some light. Don't take the sun or your dome lights for granted.

8. A Bag of sand - Next time you're at the beach, okay just kidding and seriously I am doubtful that this snow will clear in time to go to the beach at all this summer. Don't take sand from the beach, its probably illegal, but do try and have a bag of sand or some rock salt to sprinkle under your tires if you get stuck in the snow/ice.

9. An ice scraper - I just ran my last one over and cracked it to pieces (another good idea is to not throw your ice scrapper on the ground and then decide to move your car so you can get around it to get the snow off). If you are like m you might want to carry an extra.

Well there you have it, 9 really good ideas on how to be prepared. This list is not meant to be all inclusive, I am sure there are a lot of other things that could help save you in a bad situation, so do some Google searching if you really need a complete list. Listen to the news and the forecast and try to avoid going out in the storms if at all possible.

Of course do the proper vehicle maintenance to keep you car running smoothly and if you have a fender bender, an unfortunate run in with a snow bank (but I thought snow was soft?!?) or mechanical failure this winter call East Coast with your OEM replacement parts needs. This is a general guide of where to locate the paint and trim codes for your Ford.  We do not have a list of the coinciding names for the colors - but if you are at least able to match the numbers when purchasing a part you will take the guess work out of trying to match colors. 

Below I have listed a few examples of Ford cars and trucks we have in inventory. The location of the paint/trim sticker is almost always in the exact same area.  It can be found in the driver's door jamb either on the "B" pillar or on the edge of the door itsself with only a few exceptions, both old and new (unless of course we're talking about antiques, I'm not really sure when they started putting them here but it has been this way for a long time... I can honestly say I've never looked for the tag on a vehicle more than 30 years old or so).  With the door open the sticker will be in plain sight, you should not need to remove any trim pieces. 

If you do not see a sticker here, there is a slight chance it will be found under the hood, but more often than not it means your sticker has either been removed or your vehicle has been re-painted.  You can always call up a Ford dealer and give them your VIN, they should be able to tell you your factory paint color code.

Let's look at a few examples, shall we?

First we'll start off with this 1999 Mustang...

This is a '99 mustang we have here in our yard. If you open the driver's door and look just below the striker pin (that's the part attached to the body that the door latches to when closed) you will see a sticker with a bar code.

If you look in the bottom left corner of the sticker you will fint both the exterior paint code and the interior trim code. The code(s) will almost always be right here, although sometimes the sticker will look slightly different (but it's down here somewhere). I'll show some examples of different stickers a further on in this post. I have outlined the paint code in green, and the trim code in red to make it easier to see. (They are not circled like this on the sticker in real life.) In this case the paint code would be YN and the trim code is 9W.

Next we'll check out this 2003 F-350:

The sticker in this '03 F-350 is in virtually the same exact spot as on the Mustang we saw earlier.

This sticker is almost identical to the sticker from the Mustang as well. It is slightly different because this is a truck so the sticker includes info about the wheelbase and the axles etc.

Once again I have outlined the paint code in green, and the trim code in red. The paint code here is F1 and the trim is CE. The trim code is slightly further to the right than the Mustang, but not enough to make it hard to find. Basically it's the same.

 Now check out this 2001 Explorer:

On this '01 Explorer, the sticker is found in the same area of the truck, but in a slightly different spot. It's on the edge of the driver's door itsself. (ust think though, when the door is closed, the sticker is right where the others we found are) Either way, the door still needs to be open for the sticker to be visible.

This '99 F-250 was built in Canada. The Ford Motor Compant of Canada uses a sticker just a little different than ours here in the US, but you will still find the code in the same place. The placement of the sticker is the same no matter where the truck was built as well.

Another Canadian Ford with another slightly different looking sticker. Just because you don't live in Canada doesn't mean your Ford wasn't built there. You'd be suprised how many of these are in the US.

Here is an old red tag from an '89, also Canadian. I guess it looks like this is before they got the bright idea to rotate the sticker to fit it in a tight space...

 

Think this rusty old beast is too old to have the same type of sticker?

1986 F-250 (or what's left of one...)

 

Nope! Still has one way back then. It's even in the same spot too!

Now you may notice the lack of an interior code on the older tags.  Some of them do not have that information as there weren't so many different shades of the same color back then, especially on these old pickups.  Grey was grey, tan was tan, etc...

The only main difference that could potentially be a bit confusing on these older tags is that the code is stamped above the word exterior paint rather than next to it like on the newer ones.  This truck has a paint code of 51.

This is a general guide of where to locate the paint and trim codes for your Volkswagen.  We do not have a list of the coinciding names for the colors - but if you are at least able to match the numbers when purchasing a part you will take the guess work out of trying to match colors. 

Below I have listed a few examples of Volkswagens and Audis we have in inventory. The location of the paint/trim sticker is almost always in the exact same area on a newer Volkswagen.   It's been that way for a while now, so unless you have  an oldie, this should apply to you.  Your sticker should be able to be found in the trunk area under the trunkmat.  Very often it's located on the side of the spare tire well.  Sometimes it will be on the floor next to the spare, or even on the backside of the pull out carpet/ floor panel.  See examples below.  If not in one of these places I have shown, just poke around back there, it shouldn't be far!

First, we'll start off with this 2001 Passat wagon:

If you own a Passat, you may recognize this; this is the trunk of an 01 Passat wagon

What you may not have noticed is that sticker peeking out from behind the spare tire. Not exactly the first place you might look when trying to find a paint code.

This is what the sticker looks like up close. There is a lot of useful information to be found here, everything from the model, engine, options, and what we're looking for- the paint code and interior trim code. In the case of this Passat, it looks like the paint code would be LC6M and the interior is YU. There is both English and German, since after all this is a German car. Don't get confused by all the strange extra abbreviations, look hard enough and its easy to find the info you're after.

Next we have a 1997 A4:

Here we have a 97 A4 sedan. It looks like this trunk gets a little wet! This sticker is basically in the same exact place as the Passat, but its on the other side of the spare. It's still on the side of the spare tire well, but to the right instead of on the left side. On this car the paint code is LY7M and the trim code is NOC/QL. The slash with two codes is just more specific to this vehicle's interior, some cars have this and some do not.

Next we'll check out a 1998 A6 wagon:

Any Audi owners seen this before? This is in the back of a 98 A6 wagon.

In the trunk you'll find this tab to pull. That will bring up the removable carpet/ floor panel that covers the spare tire. Yank it right out of there (note, it may be a little easier for you if the rear facing third row seat is folded up and not in your way like mine!)

So now that you've pulled the tab and flipped the panel over, you'll see a sticker in the corner. I bet you can guess what we'll find on there!

The paint code is LZ5T and the trim code is NOK/HE.

Now take a look at this 2008 Rabbit:

This is the back of a new 08 Rabbit. A lot of trunk space, right?

Under the lift up floor panel in this car (which stays out of the way so nicely by hanging on the hook) we have our nifty little styrofoam tool storage compartments that double as a false bottom floor to better fit the full size spare. Pull that right out! It may be a little tricky to wiggle loose because they sort of wedge it in there under the trim, they don't want it bouncing around which is a good idea. Work at it and it will come out no problem. Don't be too afraid to get a little rough with it, it's very sturdy for styrofoam like a rubberized version almost.

Once that's out of the way you can see the sticker on the floor of the trunk. A little different of a spot this time, but its all in the same area.

This rabbit's paint code is LY3D and the interior trim is JT.

Below I have listed a couple of examples of Subarus we have in inventory.  The location of the VIN plate is usually the same on Subarus, some older models are different but for a while now, especially on the newer ones this is the most common placement.  Look for your VIN plate on top of the front driver's side strut tower near where it meets the fender under the hood, you're looking for the metal tag held on by two rivets and it has raised writing stamped into the metal, all Subarus and every other vehicle made by Fuji Heavy Industries have the same type of VIN plate (which even includes a Saab 9-2).  See examples below.

On all of the late model Subarus we deal with, the paint code should be three characters long sometimes all numbers and sometimes a mixture of letters and numbers.  The interior trim code should also be 3 characters.

This photo was taken under the hood of a 2005 Impreza.  Here I have the VIN plate circled in red, the circle is a little hard to see but its basically right in the center of the photo.  Right on top of the strut tower as mentioned above.

A close up of the VIN plate reveals the paint and trim codes on this Impreza.  Outlined in green, the trim code is B20, and the paint code is 2L7, it's outlined in blue.  They are in the lower left corner of the tag.

Here's another example:

This is a 1999 Legacy.  Same tag in the same place, it is circled in red again, a little easier to see on a black car.

Here, once again outlined in green, the trim code is 710 and the paint code, which is blue, is 54A.

Below I have listed a few examples of Hondas and Acuras we have in inventory. The location of the paint/trim sticker is almost always in the exact same place on a Honda, give or take an inch or two.   It's been that way for a long time, so unless you have antique plates on your Honda, this should apply to you.  Your sticker(s) is located on the inside edge of your driver's doorjamb near the striker pin (that's the thing the door latches to when you shut it).  See examples below.

We'll start off with this 1994 Acura Vigor, open up the driver's door you can clearly see the paint code and interior trim code stickers!  Sometimes there are two separate stickers like this and sometimes only one.  On pretty much any Honda or Acura commonly found on the road today it is almost guaranteed to be found right here! For you vintage Honda lovers I don't know what to tell you as I have never personally checked one, it may still be here anyway.  Take a look  either way it only takes a second.

Here's the same sticker up close.  That's about as easy as it gets!  Quick to find, and not hard to figure out either, it's spelled out for you... on this car the paint code is NH-578 and the interior trim is type D.

Here's another example:

This is (was) a 1995 Honda Accord.  See how the sticker is in the same place?  Open the driver's door and there you go!  On this one the only difference is that the striker pin is between the two stickers instead of them both being above it.

A close up on that 1995 Accord reveals that the paint code is YR-505M-3 and the trim is type F.

Lets look at another one:

Here is a 97 Acura RL.  Same place, right in the driver's doorjamb, the sticker looks a little different, but it's basically the same thing. 

The interior trim code is on top this time, but other than that and it being all on one sticker, its the same.  Notice a common trend here?  The paint code is NH-592P and the trim is type B.

When we sell body parts and interior parts we always recommend to our customers that they match the paint or trim codes off of their vehicle to the codes from our vehicle. You might be surprised just how many color variations both in paint and interior trim colors were used by Jeep. 

This is a general guide of where to locate the paint and trim codes for your late model Grand Cherokee. We do not have a list of the coinciding names for the colors - but if you are at least able to match the numbers when purchasing a part you will take the guess work out of trying to match colors. 

Below I have listed a few examples of Grand Cherokees we have in inventory. The location of the VIN sticker is different between the different models of Jeeps, we're focusing on the Grand Cherokee today.  Your VIN sticker is a long narrow sticker located on the inside edge of your driver's door.  (Older Grand Cherokees usually have a sticker in the same place but it does not look like this.)  See examples below.

Here you can see the location of the sticker on this 2004 Grand Cherokee.  Its on the edge of the door where it meets the door jamb, just below the door latch and can only be seen when the door is open.  Although the door panel is off in this picture, it can be seen regardless, you don't have to take your trim panel off.

Here you can see what the sticker looks like a little more closely.  It has a lot of useful information on it such as recommended tire pressure, manufacture date, VIN, vehicle weight ratings, and the paint/ trim codes.

Here you can clearly see the location of the paint and trim codes on the sticker.  On this style of sticker they will always be in the same place.  For this vehicle the paint code would be PB8, and the trim is XLL5.

Here's another example, this one is a 2000 Grand Cherokee.

On this Jeep the paint code is PGR and the trim code is H7AZ.

Below I have listed a few examples of Saabs we have in inventory. The location of the VIN plate is different between the different models of Saabs. Sometimes it is on the edge of the driver's door, and other times it can be on the inside of the door jamb.  It may not even be in one of those two places, sometimes they can be found on the radiator support, firewall, or in the glovebox (although that's much less common, nowadays they are generally sticking to these main locations).  See examples below.

On all of the late model Saabs we deal with, the paint code should be three numbers long, and the interior trim code should be a letter and two numbers.  The sticker usually looks something like this, maybe a different color but the same basic info will be there.  On older cars the sticker looks different and it may not say "paint code" and "trim color" in plain-as-day English which makes it a little trickier to find the codes.

Here you can see the sticker on this 1999 Saab 93 is located on the inside of the driver's door.  It can be seen only when the door is open.

This is a picture of your basic Saab sticker, it has useful information such as recomended tire pressure, vehicle weight ratings, and what we're talking about, paint and trim codes.

Here is a close up shot of the sticker, you can clearly see the trim code and the paint code.  They're usually somewhere near the bottom like this.  Paint code on this car is 153, and the interior trim code is L04.

Here's another example of a similar sticker on a different Saab.

Here you can see the sticker in this 2002 Saab 95 is located in the driver's door jamb above the striker pin.  It too can only be seen when you have the door open. 

See? its basically the same sticker as our other Saab, same good info, similar placement, but black. In this case the paint code is 279, and the interior trim code is K08.

Need to replace a wheel on your car, truck, van or SUV? Not sure how to begin? Below is a quick reference for how to find the size and type of wheel you have on your vehicle.

First you should know the kind of wheel you have on your vehicle. Is it aluminum or steel? What kind of a finish does it have?

This is a photo of a steel wheel without a wheel cover or hubcap. Steel wheels are usually much heavier than aluminum and are black unless they have been styled or painted.

This is a photo of a steel wheel with a plastic wheel cover - also called a hub cap. If you look closely you can see the black steel wheel under the cover.

This is a photo of a styled steel wheel. The wheel is made from steel but formed into a design and painted. You will find this type of wheel most commonly on trucks and some Jeeps and SUVs.

This is a close-up shot of a styled steel wheel. It may look like aluminum at first sight but this is really just a painted steel wheel. You can see a little rust around the edges, this is another way to tell that it is steel and not aluminum.

This is an aluminum wheel with a normal finish. Aluminum wheels can have several kinds of finishes including polished, two toned and chrome.

After you figure out what kind of wheel you have on your vehicle you will have to know what size it is. This can be done quite easily by looking at your tire. Below is a close up photo of the wall of a tire. You will find a sequence of numbers usually like this P###/## R##. The numbers after the R indicate the size or diameter of your wheel. The most common wheel sizes are 14-18 although they can be smaller or larger depending on the type of vehicle.

Once you know the type and size of your wheel there are a few more details you should notice before you look for a replacement. First notice how many lug-nut holes you have in the center of your wheel. The lugs may be covered by your hub cap  or center cap which can be easily removed. The number of lug-nut holes will make a difference for some kinds of vehicles. Next, if you have an aluminum wheel you should notice the design. How many spokes or holes does it have? What kind of finish does it have. There may have been many different wheel styles put on the same model and year of  your vehicle. You should also be aware with both steel and aluminum wheels if yours has a tire pressure sensor.

Once you have gathered all of this information you are ready to begin looking for a replacement wheel for your vehicle.

When we sell body parts and interior parts we always recommend to our customers that they match the paint or trim codes off of their vehicle to the codes from our vehicle. You might be suprised just how many color variations both in paint and interior trim colors were produced Volvos. 

This is a general guide of where to locate the paint and trim codes for your late model Volvo. We do not have a list of the coinciding names for the colors - but if you are at least able to match the numbers when purchasing a part you will take the guess work out of trying to match colors.

VIN Location on Vehicle

Beginning in 1980, all vehicles sold in the United States have a 17-digit serial number. The eighth digit from the right end identifies the model year of the vehicle.

• Years 1980 through 2000 are designated by a letter from A to Y.
• The letters I, O, Q, U, and Z are not used because they can be easily confused with a number or another letter.

Beginning with 2001, numbers are used to designate the model year.
